I couldn't type the Euro (€) sign (Alt+Ctr+5 or AltGr+E) under Office 97 after upgrading from Win 98 to Win XP Pro.
I went to the Word icon, right click on the icon, Properties, Compatibility, and choose compatibility mode for Windows 98.
That's all!
This tip works for any "older" program you are having problems under XP. For Philips FreeSpeech 2000 I choose compatibility mode for Windows NT.
