Create a Flip3D Taskbar Icon in Windows 7

Flip3D was a fun and cool looking feature in Windows Vista that can be very useful for switching between windows. With the improved Windows 7 taskbar, Flip3D was replaced with improved thumbnails and Aero Peek. Those are both good alternatives but I like the speed of viewing all my open windows at once and switching with just two clicks.

This article will show you how to create a Flip3D icon on the Windows 7 taskbar:


  1. Right click on the Desktop and select New and then Shortcut.
  2. Type in RunDll32 DwmApi #105 in the location box and click Next.

  3. Type in Flip3D as the Name and click Finish.
  4. You will now have an shortcut on the desktop that will launch Flip3D but it has the wrong icon. Right click on the Flip3D shortcut and select Properties.


  5. On the Shortcut tab click the Change Icon button. 
  6. Change the Look for icons in this file text box to C:\windows\explorer.exe and it Enter.  The Flip3D icon will now be available. Select it and click OK.

  7. Click OK to close out the shortcut properties window.
  8. Finally, just drag and drop the new shortcut on the Windows 7 taskbar to pin it.

Isn't it a lot easier to use WinKey + Tab (Instead of Alt + Tab)?

Is there a reason why you can't actually use flip 3d?

I'm using build 7000 so has it been removed?

It is still in the latest builds, including build 7000. If it does not work for you I would suspect that you are not running the Aero Glass interface. Flip3D is only available on computers that support the glass interface.

Nice trick, but it does demand admin rights to run32.dll for it (even checked in property), so it doesn't open directly to the flip3D.
My wireless Laser mouse does it (left click + wheel) but more long to respond at command flip. So it does takes the same time, less hassle the command prompt for admin rights. A way to fix it?

This tip is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted the old Flip3D icon on my taskbar just as it was in Vista and you gave me step by step instructions on exactly how to implement that. As long as you meet the requirements for Aero on your PC/Laptop and have all the proper settings enabled then you will be able to add Flip 3D to your Windows 7 32bit or 64 bit system. Yes it is easy to just use the shortcut keys Win+Tab, but some of us just like the novelty of it all. I think you come up in a good position on google too when you do a search for flip 3d icon, add flip 3d to windows 7 and several other keywords. I'm sure my post will help a little too since it is keyword enriched ;) It's the least I can do for the helpful instructions you have shared with us on your blog. Thanks again and good luck!
