Remove text on taskbar icons like Windows 7

Published in Windows Vista User Interface Tweaks by Steve Sinchak with 56,163 views and 33 comments

An easy way to give your Windows Vista box a clean look is to remove the application labels on the taskbar.  With a registry hack you can make your Windows Vista taskbar look similar to the Windows 7 icon only taskbar.

  1. Click on the start button and type in regedit and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetrics.
  3. Create a new REG_SZ value and call it MinWidth
  4. Set the value of MinWidth to 56
  5. Restart

Enjoy!

Update: I changed the MinWidth to 56.  Thanks for the help Gem. -Steve

This also worked for me in Windows 7! I didn't want to combine the taskbar buttons, but I wanted to hide the labels. Setting the MinWidth value to 56 worked! Thank you Steve and thank you Gem

I couldn't get the theme to work either because after the Vista Glazz thing I didn't copy the entire theme (e.g. en-US and Shell folder and the Windows 7.msstyles) then it worked. Also when creating the value make sure its binary. I hope that helps,

The tweak does work with Vista sp2, I run Uniblue registry booster after to scan for reg errors & restarting again the text was removed from the taskbar icons.

Thanks for the tweak.

I've done something similar along with using a custom theme to make vista look really similar to Win7, however the icons on task bar buttons are still really small. Is there a setting in the system registry I can edit to increase the size of just the icons on task bar buttons? It really looks odd to me having large quick launch icons while the actual task bar buttons are tiny.

I've tried using the Advanced appearance settings to increase the size of the "caption buttons" setting, but that also changes the size of multiple other things that I don't want to change (close, max, min buttons; task bar size changes slightly, etc..). So far I've been unable to find any solutions.

Thanks in advance!

Is there any settings in the system registry I could change that would increase the size of the icons on task bar buttons (not quick launch)? I've successfully been able to do the steps listed here to remove the text from the buttons, and I used a downloaded theme with my patched theme file to make everything look a lot like Windows 7, but the icons on the task bar button are still tiny when compared to the size of their neighboring quick launch icons, and it looks really odd.

I've already tried increasing the size of the "Caption buttons" setting in Advanced appearance settings, but that also changes the size of other things (close, max/restore, close buttons on windows, and task bar size slightly), and I don't want those to change.

Thanks in advance.

Today I reinstalled from scratch and before this I hadn't had to tweak to have only the icon show for a minimized window or application. I'm using Ultimate 64bit and dual monitors. Does anyone have an idea on how it was possible before? And the tweak isn't working for me.

Hey i run Vista home premium 32bit and i set it to min width 56 and it worked like a charm. oh and Charles, try downloading a windows 7 theme from here http://giannisgx89.deviantart.com/art/Windows-7-Style-For-Vista-102269037

If it doesn't work then just save yourself the time and just go out and buy windows 7 os. :)

Worked for me. Running Win7 Ultimate 64bit. It actually doesn't get rid of all the text, it truncates after the 1st or 2nd character with "..."

I haven't tried changing the value from 56 to a lower number though. Thanks a lot!

Try 56 first. If that doesn't work, try -255.
