    There is no doubt that Microsoft's recent announcement that it is terminating distribution of Win98 and Win2K Server is the first step toward abandoning those operating systems. ¿Why? ¿How will that affect users of those systems? ¿What's MS's longer-range plan?

     Here's 3 different views of those questions:

it kind of annoys me that they would do such a thing. i mean win95 and 98 i could understand. but to be rid of win2000 server. seems a bit drastic.

OS = Windows XP Pro SP2
CPU = Intel Core Solo 1.5GHz
MEM = 1GB
DISPLAY = Intel GMA950
Internal HDD= 60GB
External HDD= 80GB
External HDD= 250GB
Mac Mini
Firefox 1.5.0.8

Is this not obvious to you?

If you make the old product unattractive by removing support for it, then your customers are more likely to buy the new product, even if it sucks-at least it is supported. This is standard monopoly corporate strategy and de rigeur for Microsoft. They backed away from NT in order to shove 2000 down your throat when it was still riddled with bugs. The truth is people don't need the OS at the rate it is produced so they need to create an artificial stimulus, which is removing support for it and retiring the related MCSE exams.

Someone needs to actually read before they make such statements. MS is still going to support Server 2000 just not sell it on retail shelves. You will still be able to purchase it for several more months via OEM channels. It is common among all companies to discontinue selling their older products when newer versions are develped. This is not just a Miscrosoft action. In fact, most companies pull their replaced versions of their product at a much quicker rate than MS does.

   Penguin is on the mark. The issue is deeper than knee-jerk "¡that damn MS!" and that is why I provided 3 different links to credible writers making different but qualified reports.

   For the record, I am not an admirer of MS, which became the #1 OS not thru offering the best possible product but thru superior marketing strategy, and has since used its superiority to stiffle opposition. But MS is a corporation in business to make money, not a charity or civic organization and it has never claimed otherwise. So, my relationship with MS is purely business - I buy and use its products but have no loyalty to it and will switch in a heartbeat if/whenever a competitor offers me a better product at a competitive price.

I like how you posted three different views.  Too often people read one and forget about other sides.

    Thanks, Steve. I try. I wish I could do more to contribute to this site because I sense (from educated instinct and my experience here) that YOU are the sort of businessman who would like to make a mint (ain't nothing wrong with honest profit) while enjoying serving the web and all us who use it.

    Take this thought into the New Year: YOUR Tweakxp.com is a class act.
