Hey guys. Just recently I realized that "iPhone" (with an icon but no drive letter) is listed under My Computer (with the usual C: and other drives). The strange thing is: I don't own an iPhone and there's nothing plugged into any of my USB ports right now. Double-clicking or right-clicking and "exploring" or "opening" the icon does nothing. Additionally, everything in my Device Manager seems to be fine; no yellow exclamation marks, etc. Any ideas what might be going on?
I'm using Vista SP2 by the way. Thanks!!

Here's something else that's a little strange. Whenever I open a window (any window, e.g. My Computer, My Documents, etc) and then close it, Windows will momentarily re-paint my desktop icons even though the icons were already painted correctly. In other words, when I close the window, I'll see my icons go from "normal" to momentarily white, then back to normal.
Any ideas on this one either? Thanks!
[Note: Rebuilding the Icon Cache by deleting and re-creating IconCache.db did not work.]

Hey Richie, thanks for responding. I'll try downloading the latest version of iTunes after class and see if the iPhone icon goes away. It's odd that it only recently appeared; I've had iTunes installed on this computer almost as long as I've had it (about 2 years).
I tried the regedit tweak and it didn't work. Are you sure the article is right that it's a DWORD value entry I'm supposed to add and modify? Similar articles say it's that Max Cached Icons is a STRING value entry. I dunno if it matters.

Try disabling the following if present:
Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers -> Apple Mobile Device USB Driver

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run,type Services.msc then press OK
Scroll down and find the following service if present:
Mobile Device Driver
If you find it, double-click on it.
In the next window that opens, click the 'Stop' button.
Then change the 'Startup Type:' to 'Disabled'.
Press Apply/OK then close any open windows.
Restart your pc.

| So there was no Mobile Device Driver but there was an Apple Mobile Device Driver. I stopped it and set it to disabled and re-started, but the iPhone icon is still listed under My Computer.

Not certain this will help or not,try it.
Check in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers for USBAAPL.SYS, if its present try renaming it to something like USBAAPL.SYS_OLD
Then restart your pc.
If you're denied access to the file, you need to take ownership of it,then try again.
You can do that easily by adding "Take Ownership" to Explorer right click context menu.
Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista:
http://tinyurl.com/y9frrrp
Also try this:
Open up Registry Editor, navigate to and click on the following key in bold text below to expand it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ MyComputer \ NameSpace
Under the NameSpace key in the left hand column, double click on each key in turn to open the right hand pane, see if you're able to find an iPhone entry.
If you do find it,back up/export that key in the left hand column, and then delete the key.
Exit Registry Editor,restart your pc.
