Download TFC by OldTimer to your Desktop.
* Please double-click TFC.exe to run it,if you're running Windows Vista right click on TFC.exe and click on "Run as Administrator".
* It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
* Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Let it run uninterrupted until it's finished.
* Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it doesn't,please manually restart the pc to ensure a complete cleanup.

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop.
Double-click on SecurityCheck.exe and follow the on-screen instructions inside the black box.
Notepad should open a file named checkup.txt.
Copy and paste the entire contents of that file into your next reply.

Download Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 to your desktop:
Double click on HJTInstall.exe,it will prompt you to extract hijackthis.exe to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
When the install is complete,HijackThis will automatically launch.
When the license agreement appears, select "I Accept" and then click on the "Do a system scan only" button.
When the scan is complete, click on the "Save Log" button, then save it to your desktop.
Copy and paste the entire contents of that log into your next reply.

First of all please turn off/disable UAC [User Account Control].
How can I disable the User Account Control (UAC) feature on my Windows Vista computer?:
http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Here or Here.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
(If using Windows Vista,be sure to "Run As Administrator").

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then click Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

First close your web browser, then open it by right clicking on your browser icon and select 'Run as Administrator'.
Run 'ESET Online Scanner' using Internet Explorer:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Place a check in the box 'YES,I accept the Terms of Use' after reading.
Then click 'Start'.
Allow the activex control to install.
Then click 'Start' in the 'ESET Online Scanner' window.
Place a check in the box 'Remove found threats'.
Leave the box 'Scan unwanted applications' blank.
Then press 'Scan'.
The scan will take up some time so please be patient.
Once the scan has finished, post the entire contents of the logfile:
C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

If ESET won't run,run the following:
Download and run an 'Automatic Scan' using the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.
Follow the instructions in the link below to configure the tool before scanning:
How Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 7.0 automatically scans for viruses.
When the scan has finished click on 'Nuetralize all'.
Exit the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool,a box will pop up with the following message:
"The program will be unloaded and uninstalled.
Do you want to uninstall?".

Click on "Yes",then another box will pop up with the following message:
"Are you sure you want to completely remove Virus Removal Tool and all of its components?"
Click on "Yes",the removal process will begin.
Finally another box will pop up with the following message:
"To complete the uninstallation of Virus Removal Tool, your computer must be restarted,
Would you like to restart now?".

Then click on "Yes",your pc will restart.

Post the following in your next reply:
The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report.
The contents of the Eset Online Scanner log.
A new HijackThis log.

I have done everything as asked.  However, the computer is running so slow, I cannot navigate to C:\Programs\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.  You will have to take my word that there were no infected files.  There was no malware either.  I can show you the Malware and Hijack files as they were saved at the Desktop.

However, the computer is running so slow,

Try running Selective Startup using System Configuration, see if you can find out whats causing the problem:

Failed to follow both of your suggestions!

First I could not navigate to Selective Startup.  Where is it?  Couldn't find System and Maintenance in Control Panel.

Tried to do an install but DVD didn't recognise current Windows files so did not even provide a menu of tasks to perform.

My last question.  How do you perform a Vista install (upgrade repair or clean) without a DVD?  I have the Product ID.  Can I just access the files from the web?

Originally bought HP laptop with everthing installed.  Then 6 months later had a hard disk failure so they gave me a new hard disk and Operating System Windows Vista Home Basic DVD and Application and Driver Recovery DVD.

I've restored Windows to a previous date and things have got back to normal.  Thank you for your advice and patience.
