I've recently been having my system "freeze" up halfway through the POST screen. It displays some of the system info and then stops. I can restart by hitting the power button, and then all is well and it boots normally. It's done this several times, stopping at different places on the POST screen, and no beeps are coming from the system when this happens. Also, and I'm not sure if this is related or not, I'm getting "warning" messages in event viewer. They are "event ID 51 : An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation". I've run chdsk on my disks, as well as the manufacturer's diagnostics, with no problems reported. I've also run memtest86+ with no problems reported, and I've changed the power supply (fan was going out anyway). I'm running WinXP home SP3, and the system is almost 3 years old. Once the system is running, I'm having no problems or strange behavior.
Any ideas as to what's going on?
Thanks in advance

How have you run checkdisk? The correct way (with XP) is to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r on each drive (ie, chkdsk /r for the system drive, chkdsk d: /r for d: drive, chkdsk e: /r for e: drive, etc). Any other method of running checkdisk is not effective (or less effective, depending on which method you use).

That's the way I ran it Allan, first on my C drive and then on my D drive. Both times it reported no bad sectors.

Then you did not run it from the Recovery Console. When run correctly, chkdsk ALWAYS reports that it found and repaired errors.

If still no joy after following Allan's suggestion, for diagnostic purposes try the following.
First turn off your pc,then disconnect from the mains power supply.
Unplug all/any external devices ie printer, scanner, external drives etc.
Open up the case, disconnected the power lead from your cd-rom drives, floppy disk drives, card readers etc,and any extra hard drives you may have installed.
Remove all cards,ie graphics,sound,NIC,modem etc.
If you have more than one stick of ram installed, remove them all but one.
Once you're down to bare bones, replace the case panels, power up your pc,let us know what happens now at startup.

Ok, after running chkdsk from the recovery console again, it did report finding and repairing numerous bad sectors, on both my disks. After I rebooted the next time my system ran through the POST screen, then uttered a foul sounding, steady beeping, and would not boot up. I disconnected everything, and opened the case. The manufacturer had installed the SATA cable to the C drive in such a way it had a mighty tight bend/kink in it. I replaced it with another SATA cable, new, that I had got with another drive and never used. I routed this one more carefully. I checked all other cables, cards, and ram mounts while in the case, then buttoned it up. The system booted up properly the first time, and two subsequent reboots, and I'm not seeing any warnings in Event Viewer so far. Could this cable have been the cause of my problems? I've had something similar happen to another system with an IDE cable gone bad. I've backed up all data and imaged the system drive in case of recurring problems.
Thanks for the prompt and helpful replies. I"ll post back if I have any more troubles.

Allan, right you are! So far I've still had no further problems. I'm going to watch things closely though. I'm hoping to make this system last until Win 7 is available on new systems, but I realize Murphy's Law may come into play before then
Thanks again
