Hi Ritchie, just a quick message to say that i got my autoplay sorted from that link you gave me.

Locate the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry entry on the right pane. The registry key is in DWORD hexadecimal value, which each bit determines which type of drive to disable or enable AutoPlay feature. There are many possible value for NoDriveTypeAutoRun, some possible wrong value that disable AutoPlay are:

0×000000B5 (181) disable AutoRun on CD-ROM drives, plus default unknown drive, removable drive (meant for floppy or ZIP), network drive and reserved drive type.

0×000000FF (255) disable AutoRun/AutoPlay on all drive types.

The best bet is to set NoDriveTypeAutoRun to default value as set by Windows Vista, which is 0×00000091 (hexadecimal) or 145 (decimal). Previous Windows version such as XP uses 0×00000095 (hexadecimal) or 149 (decimal). To enable AutoPlay on all drive types, set NoDriveTypeAutoRun to 0 (zero) or 0×00000080 (128) which only disable AutoPlay on unknown reserved file type.

I CHANGED THE VALUE IN MY REGISTRY TO THE ABOVE HIGHLIGHTED VALUE AND CLOSE IT INSERTED A DISC AND AUTORUN WORKED IMMEDIATLY

The Local Group Policy Editor is only available in Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions.
You must be running either Windows 7 Starter or Windows 7 Home Premium edition,hence the Local Group Policy Editor isn't available.
Any policies in place will be found in the registry.

Try the following if you haven't already.

I dont get anything in the search results when i enter group policy.

Click on Start,in the search box type [b]group policy[/b] then press Enter.

Check the Autoplay Policies configuration in the Local Group Policy Editor.
Under Local Computer Policy click Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components,double click on [b]AutoPlay Policies[/b].

Double click on each of the following in the right hand pane,make sure they're all set correctly:
[b]Turn off Autoplay
Don't set the always do this checkbox.
Turn off Autoplay for non-volume devices.
Default behavior for Autorun.[/b]

hi the service is already started and set to automatic. this has not worked since i installed windows 7 64 bit

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Run,type [b]services.msc[/b] then press Enter.
Scroll down to and double-click on the [b]Shell Hardware Detection[/b] service,make its [b]Started[/b] and set to [b]Automatic[/b].

For security reasons as most of the recent viruses,trojans and malware like the Conficker Worm are spreading via autorun,Windows 7 has disabled this feature by default.
Go to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Autoplay
At the top in Autoplay Properties,place a check in the box" [b]Use Autoplay for all devices[/b]" and click "[b]Save[/b]" at the bottom.
Configure your autoplay preferences under "[b]Choose what happens when you insert each type of media or device[/b]".
Press "[b]Save[/b]" at the bottom when you've done.
[b]Restart your pc.[/b]

CD/DVD Drive Autoplay not working

I have replaced my Cd rom in my computer that i have just built. i am having a problem with the autorun feature. i cannot seem to get it to work, ive been through the autoplay features and everything is setup the the way it should be. it didnt work on the old cd drive and the same goes for the new one.

ive had registry fixes for it but they don't seem to work

does anyone have any ideas? I am running Windows 7 64 bit and its a custom built machine
