cant seen to install programmes

i tried to install java update and got this message

the windows installer service coundnt be accessed. This can occur it you are running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. also when i shut down there are always updates for the AOL software the computer wont shut down until it tries to install them but obviously isnt able to

any ideas

When I click on the Windows explorer Quicklaunch icon (next to the Start button),
Windows explorer always opens in "My Documents".

How can I make it open in C:\ ?

I've noticed these entries in the shortcut Properties:

Target: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe
as well as:
Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Does this have anything to do with it?

Hi all,
Just switched from a Dell desktop (Windows 98) to a Lenovo laptop with Windows XP. When i look at a picture (on Gmail account or in Kodak Easy share) a picture that is bright and colorful on the desktop looks washed out when looking at it (same picture) using the laptop.. what gives?? its very disappointing!! Does the Dell monitor have better resolution than the laptop?? can i hook my dell monitor to my laptop??? thanks

Strange copying issue with XP

Hi everyone,

Having a strange issue with copy/paste that I've never encountered before.

The setup: Two different systems both running Windows XP sp3. Both systems were built around the same time and had the OS installed simultaneously. However, when I attempt copy files off of a DVD to the hard drive, they behave differently.

Scenario: DVD containing multiple directories (directory1, directory2, etc etc) with various excel spreadsheets in each directory. What I'm trying to do is copy files from multiple directories at once onto my local HD. What I typically do is open up a search window and do my search. The search brings up the files I want, each is in a different folder on the DVD. I then select the files it found and drag them onto my HD. Here is where the problem comes in.

One system will do as it is supposed to do and only copy the files I have selected onto my HD (for example, 6 excel files from multiple directories) The other system however, copies over ALL the contents of the DVD onto my HD. This is a very odd problem that I've never seen before but I'm guessing has something to do with the way XP is setup to copy over multiple files from a DVD/CD to the HD. One other note, if I copy over each file one by one from the system in question, it works. But like I said, when I try to do more than one file it just simply copies over ALL the contents of the folder as opposed to just the files I've selected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Shortcut Creation - Expand vs. Collapse

I have been working on what appears to be a simple annoyance with creating shortcuts for the Start Menu and have not been able to correct it.

Any shortcut I create now and drag to the Start Menu is "expanded", it has the small black expanded arrow to the side >; just like the black arrow that is normal for the Programs, Settings, Search, etc. selections on the Start Menu or the black expansion arrow for Sent To when you right click on a file or folder.

I prefer to have the shortcut collapsed (without the arrow) and click on it myself to open it rather than have Windows expand it when the cursor touches it.

I was used to making shortcuts either expanded or collapsed by:

1. Expanded - drag the folder or disk drive to the menu bar and drop it

2. Collapsed - right click on the folder or drive and select Create Shortcut; then drag that shortcut to the start menu

Two of my systems now create only expanded shortcuts no matter which of the above options I use to make them. However, I do have a couple of laptops and another desktop that act in the manner I first described. The only thing I can figure is that I selected a "Feature", "Option", or "Preference" buried somewhere that sets the creation of all shortcuts to be expanded. Sort of like selecting one of the Expand - Control Panel, My Documents, My Pictures, etc. boxes in the Customize Classic Start Menu under the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties; Start > Setting > Taskbar and Start Menu > Start Menu > Customize.

This was not the behavior when I first installed XP Pro on the systems and it made no difference if the installation was a grueling XP only with no Service Pack installation and then updated or if I used my slipstreamed XP with SP 3. After a period of time, new shortcuts placed on the Start Menu will be expanded, but the ones I first created would remain collapsed. If created another shortcut of one of the initially collapsed folders or drives, it always shows as expanded while the initial one remains collapsed.

I have given up looking for something in gpedit.msc because you have to intuitively know where it is. I have searched the registry for "expand" and "collapse" and finally got tired of clicking f3! I am sure there is a registry key that has to be either set to zero or deleted to bring the creation of shortcuts back to its initial default setting when XP was first installed, can someone help me out?

hello friends..
m working in a govt orgnz. and my adminstrator have blocked my computer from using the Internet. Also, i cant use the regedit program, becuase i cant install new programs on to my computer. i need a tweak or a solution to by- pass all this security hick-ups and use the computer without the adminstrator knowing about it. he should not even be able to see my IP address from the server. whenever i try to install any software it ask me administrator password and i dont know that. i only have my userid & password.

is this possible or i am just dreaming? ;)

Hi,

After my last topic (Computer running slow after a while ?) I now have reinstall almost everything and the speed are very good as long I only run Windows applications.

My big problem are when I want to play my favorit game Microsofts Flight Simulator FSX and using some very good add-ons program like Active Sky X and some very good scenerys.

I know that you going to say, ask on the programs forum how to speed up your FSX, but this is not the problem, I have to find out how to tweak and speed up my Windows XP.

Let me tell you what I have:

1 Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
(I cant update to SP3 without getting Blue Sceen and a startup loop that never ends I hade to uninstall SP3 to get in ?)
2. 2,20 Gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
3. 3328 Megabytes Installed Memory (in fact 4GB)
4. 1453,82 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
5. NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT [Display adapter]
6. The latest driver for DirectX,NVIDIA,C++, MS .Net Framework 1.0 to 3.5
7. Erunt,Auslogics Reg. Defrag,NTREGOPT,Pagedfrg and O&O Defrag programs.

and what I have done:
1. I have follow NickN tweak turtrial "Setting up FSX and how to tune it"

2. I have a Aircraft add-on PMDG MD-11, they suggest me to use a tool -
4GB Patch ( http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php )and I have done it.

You have to change the BOOT.ini from

SO MY QUESTION ARE:

Is it this changing that makes the problems to run other add-on program becaus now 4GB Patch use more then 2GB memory that are the max for FSX default.

When I check Taskmanager the FSX Processer CPU use are around 45%proc and memory use around 1.5 - 1.8GB

I still should have 2GB left to use, so how do I tweak this to max ?

One of the FSX Tweak suggestion was to set FSX in Taskmanager to high priority and the color qualety to 16 bite instead of high 32 ( also in FSX )

Dos this infect my others runnig programes ?

I have tweak service as Blackvip suggest and the "selective start" as you have suggest for a long time ago (LOL)

Maybe I have reach the max performance whit my system and setting, but you maybe cane give me some advice (if possible)

my fastest download speed is 40kbs
my friend typed something on his command prompt and it boost his download speed from 100kbs to 180kbs but he is using vista
i asked him what he did but he forgot already
just wondering if i can do the same with xp cuz im tired of the lousy slow download speed that is taking forever

Computer running slow after a while ?

Hi,

After Richie helped me cleaning up at HijackThis Forum I still have something going on behind that slow down my computer after a while, special when I run Microsoft Flight Simulator.

I have checked that I have all the newest drivers installd and the only error I get are when I run DXDiag. In Tab for Network its a note:

"Registeringinformation for a DirectPlay-program are missing or corrupt. You should reinstall the program."

Well, I do not know what program who need to be reinstall or how to check wish one to reinstall, there are some 6-8 tasks but it is only three files they use:
dpnet.dll
dpwsockx.dll
dpmodemx.dll

Hope someone cane help me.

Delay after deleting a file

Anyone know how to shorten the delay between trying to delete a file and windows XP telling you you cant?

The ~6sec delay is pretty annoying!

Steps to reproduce delay:
Open any local file ("new text document.txt") with any programe (notepad).
While still open, try to delete the file.
Wait ~6 seconds
"Error deleting file or folder" message window pops up.
