I can't TAB?

Whenever I right click and select 'open in new tab' my PC freezes up for a good minute and opens it in a new window. Any help, I'm clueless in New England :-P

When I choose shut down it seems the computer goes into some hibernation mode then eventually boots back up into windws and says that 'Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown' and shows these 'problem details.' The PC has also hung on the 'Windows is shutting down screen' when trying to shut down as well.

Can I Disable Windows Media Player SYNC Altogether?

I have my autoplay options all set to 'do nothing' yet if I start Windows Media Player it recognizes my USB memory sticks and wants to SYNC them! I've tried finding an optin in WMP to disable this garbage but can't see it anywhere. I have no use for sync, it only messes things up royally.....

Windows Live Mail locking up.

Everytime I run Windows Live Mail it freezes. SOmehow it manages to download the email but I cannot view it until I start the task manager and end task. Then when I enter live mail again I can view the email but it always freezes showing what you see on the screen shot.

If I close out of Windows Live Mail I can restart it and I will be able to click on 1 new email and view it. Then it starts 'downloading & receieving' all those things you see in the screen shot and it freezes again, not allowing me to view anymore messages.

Freezing after installation of SP2 (even after uninstalled)

I was hoping someone might be able to help with a rather odd problem I've been having with Vista. I recently replaced a bunch of things in my computer - basically everything other than the drives and sound card. Reactivation was a pain but seemed to go smoothly. I updated all the drivers in ths OS (Vista Ultimate, 32 bit) and let it "burn in" for a couple of days by running Prime95 and keeping an eye on temperatures, stability, etc. Everything worked fine - no apparent problems with hardware or drivers and things would chug along quite nicely.

I noticed that SP2 is lurking in Windows updates, so figure what the heck - improve performance and stability a bit. So I went ahead and installed it. Unfortunately, to my dismay, there was a background installation of an updated version of Avira Antivirus that I had forgotten about. Something blew up and I had to hard reboot. SP2 had not been completely installed it (did not go through the part with the reboots). In any event, I tried it again and this time it did finish - no installation problems at all with SP2. Also completed the Avira installation, which also went fine. BTW, I have both Symantic Endpoint Protection and Avira installed. They appear to have played nice together to date. Also on the system is ZoneAlarm.

However, shortly after I installed SP2, a very odd problem started to surface. After using the computer for a while, it would slowly start to seize up. First, one application would just stop responding and show "(Not Responding)" in the toolbar. Then another. Then I would not be able to bring up task manager. Then I wouldn't be able to bring up the start menu. This process would occur over the course of say 10 minutes after maybe 2 hours of use, but this seemed to vary. The mouse however always remained responsive. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing. Other times, the "(Not Responding)" would not show - various apps would start freezing, then the taskbar, then nothing would work - mouse moves but no windows move, can't switch tasks, can't open the start menu, nothing.

Keeping the computer on overnight shows the end result - when I push a key on the keyboard, the screen wakes up and the mouse pointer moves around, but nothing is shown on the screen other than my desktop background, or the background to the login screen. In either case there is nothing else at all - no icons, no taskbar, no login prompt, nothing. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing. So I need to hard reboot.

I have gone through the Event Viewer logs and the Reliability & Performance Reports as well as the System Information reports. The logs do not show any particular event or thing happening around the time things lock up. I have also followed the steps suggested in other forums - namely running TFC/ATF, scanning with MBAM and with SuperAntivirus in safe mode and have also run HijackThis. Nothing unusual seemed to be detected, other than some cookies. Not sure I should be posting the logs with this message but if it would be appropriate to do so happy to follow up with another post.

In addition, in the course of trying to resolve this, I have noticed that things keep humming along quite nicely in safe mode.

I have also tried backing out SP2. It uninstalled successfully, but unfortunately the problem did not seem to go away.

I'd very much like to avoid a complete reinstall of Vista. If anyone has any clues on what this is and/or how to fix it I would certainly appreciate it.

Vista SP2 Updates

Just a quick question, yesterday I installed Vista SP2 through Windows Updates and I have noticed that all previous updates are still shown. I thought that SP2 included all previous updates. I seem to remember but I am probably wrong that previous updates were cleared. At present I have a never ending list of updates in the updates history.

Windows update can up and said that there were 2 updates available. One for IE8 compat mode, and one for the search assistant.

When it went to install however, the installation for windows service pack 2 came up. What is with the bait and switch?

I can read the timer or the song/artist name because the text is white...

Bios Update won't run

So, I have a dell vostro and have been trying to update my bios, I am running 64 bit vista, and downloaded the update, from the dell site, but when I try to run it it says there isn't admin privileges. Yet I am in my administer account. And not running any security software besides the windows security center. I have tried going to the manage account when you right click my computer, and so on. I am lost at what it could be blocking the bios update.

Application errors in Vista

Hello.
I recently re-installed Vista, and it was working well for a while.
Now all of sudden I have started to get Application errors.
The error message is something like "The instruction 0x76176bcb referenced memory at 0x000000008. The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to termiante the program."

That happened with Explorer.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?
