Opinions About Windows 7

I dunno. Honestly all of the features mentioned so far for Windows 7, could easily be added to Vista simply through a service pack. Oh wait, isn't there one due out very soon? <- Pointing out the heavy sarcasm. Hopefully new pics featuring a possible UI change will come out soon.

I want to see something innovative outside of the GUI. something actually user friendly.
Like for example:
- a completely backwards compatible OS. One that doesn't need new drivers for everything after installing it.
- an OS that doesn't require you to get a new top of the line computer, since the old one pretty much blew up after installation, or ran slower than a computer you bought it back in 1992
- an OS that has the same sort of system architecture as the last, so power users (like many of us senior members) can easily make changes without having to relearn where those changes can be made

I want to hear what the folks at tweaks.com have to say about the up coming OS, and what they'd like to see in it.

Husband - sharing violation, access denied.

Wife - i made a mistake in marrying you.
Husband - data type mismatch.

Wife - you are useless.
Husband - by default.

Wife - what is my value in your life?
Husband - unknown virus detected.

Wife - do you love me or your computer?
Husband - Too many parameters.

Wife - i will go to my dad's house.
Husband - program has performed an illegal operation,it will close.

Wife - I will leave you forever.
Husband - close all programs and log in again

Just try reading this without laughing till you cry!!!

Pocket Tazer Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this:

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse- sized tazer. The effects of the tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....??

WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.

AWESOME!!!

Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, 'no possible way!' What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.. .?

I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it ' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . .

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD . . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE ......!!!

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.

Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a tazer, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.. A three second burst would be considered conservative?

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling.

Apparently I pooped on myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!

P.S... My wife, can't stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!

Tuned up a friend's pc last night

I found 15 running trojans, repaired the TCP IP stack, removed a LSP ( i think its called) and repaired the winsock, JUST to get it online where I could install my preferred AV and update it. Updated the AV, ran a full system scan and removed 85 more infections. I still can't believe the darn thing even booted with 100 on it. Finally cleaned all the temp files, registry and then ran Perfect Disk 2008 on it.

After I was done, the friend and his son both agreed the pc was about 12x faster than the day they bought it. I highly doubt that, but you can see a major speed difference on it now.

Main reason of this post was to share the wild # of infections and to also serve notice: If your running an inferior AV, you might want to be sure what in the blue hell you click upon. I installed Avira free on there and cranked up the heuristic to FFB, so hopefully there won't be a repeat of that infection rate.

This has to the be the worst state I have found a pc in. Im glad its smokin fast once again and CLEAN. :hehe:

What should I charge for Small Business network installation

OK guys, I work for a medium size company and one of the previous employee's asked me to setup a network for his small business.

The problem is I haven't done any type of consulting work and really don't know what reasonable amount I should charge him.

This is in the Washington DC area.

What I did was install and configure the following

(1)
-Linux server for security, firewall, VPN, Anti-spam, Anti-virus, DHCP, DNS
-windows 2003 SBS with exchange,users folders, shared folder, active Dir, print server, file server, created user account.
-1 network color laser jet printer
-5 desktops running windows XP, anti-virus, flash, java, office small business edition, defender, mapped user & shared folders, mapped printer to all user accounts.

(2)
in the future he is going to want to have the ability for 50 remote employees to access folders and email(via pop).

(3) on-site and remote/phone support

what would the going rate be for initial installation and what would be a fair hourly rate for the support?

I don't want overcharge him but I really don't want to work for free either as I already have a full time job and this cuts into Miller Time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

At a time when serious pc hell is breaking loose; viruses, crashes, adware, malware, mysterious error messages...having a wrinkled brow because one cannot figure out why one's boot time has gone up to 1min, 20 secs. from 58 secs. would not only be in bad taste but deserving of an unmentionable response. Of course, it would be quite another matter if one couldn't help being a self-centered, obsessed ass.

Best monitor for under 400 dollars?

Hey guys. I'm looking for a good monitor under 400 dollars.
My preferences are the following:

Anything above 20" inches is great.
High contrast ratio
Good response time (5-2ms)
Not too bulky, not too heavy
Good for Gaming, but also good for everyday tasks, such as word documents (IE: Good display of text and other things)

And, as stated it has to be under 400 USD. I am looking primarily for a place to buy it from that I can get on a payment system since I can't pay outright right now. I am willing to go as high as 500, but I need a good reason to do so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially considering I haven't had much help on other sites as of yet.

Looking to build my first PC

Hey guys. I'm looking to build my first PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want it to be able to run moderately intensive games, nothing HUGE like Crysis but something in line of Spore, and Civilization type games. The one I have now barely runs any of that and crashes all the time. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I do want some fairly recent stuff to start off with. And some resources to help me on my first build. I really have to learn a lot because I don't know anything about building one. The only reason I am is because I like a challenge and I think I would save money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

LCD Plasma T.V.

I was wandering around the stores today looking at T.V.'s and noticed they have USB ports in them. Can a USB hard drive be plugged into a LCD or Plasma T.V. that has USB ports so that movies could be watched from the hard drive?

Greetings:

I belong to a few boards and forums dealing with both technology and just other things that interest me. On almost all these forums, there is a button reading something like, "View Posts Since Your Last Visit," or "New Posts," or "Today's Posts" or something like that.

I think maybe I am blind or close to it, because it don't see any such option here at this forum. So, is there a link, button, switch or something that I can click on that will allow me to see what has been posted here since the last time I visited.

Although this is a great forum loaded with knowledge that is hard to come by (especially for free), and there are some very dedicated members here who come daily just to help and ask nothing in return, but this forum isn't one of my regular stops. Sorry to say, I only come here when I need help or I am looking for a hack for this or that. So, that is why I was wondering if there were some way I could view all the posts that were posted since I last logged in? Maybe it is here all along, and I just don't know where to look. The main reason such a 'button' would be valuable to me is it may allow me to give back a little that I have taken from here. For instance, I really don't have the time to go through all the different sections, but if there were a way to just see posts I haven't yet seen, it would save me time and perhaps I could answer a few questions, since I have learned a lot from here. And next, it is just a great way to learn new things. Perhaps there would be a question 'hidden' in a section of the forum that I wouldn't ever click on unless I needed to ask someone who goes to that section a question or two. If you had a 'New Posts" button, then I would be exposed to things I wouldn't normally see. Am I making any sense to anyone?

I know I ramble on and on, it could be the caffeine or the lack of it that causes such behavior. Please forgive me if you find it annoying. :) :)

Could you guys test these applications, i mean really 'extreme' test them on a virtual machine or something, review and rate them too? That would really be something! You know very well a software reviewed and rated by you would be 'worth it's weight in gold', as it were, on this site.

I cannot help wondering, if file compression can be taken care of in Windows from the right click menu by simply creating a new zipped folder and dragging your file to it, why did such utilities come to be--or is this a feature that did not exist prior to XP? I became a pc user only after XP and had never worked on a computer before it's release, so bear with me if this is a stupid question.:unsure:
