I would assume both would have the same support lifespan but no, we can't tell you for sure. You'd have to ask Microsoft.

And no, both Home and Pro have exactly the same kernel - neither is more or less stable than the other.

If your system will handle it, I'd try Vista. The easiest way to find out if it suits your needs is to dual boot XP & Vista. Of course, you'd install XP first. Play with Vista for a while and if for some reason you don't like it you can always uninstall it. And if you do like it you can uninstall XP (or just leave it as a dual boot option).

Regarding the fact that Microsoft is already working on the next version of Windows, they are ALWAYS working on the next version of Windows - that's what they do ;). In fact, I'd be very surprised if they don't have teams working on versions of Windows that are two or three generations removed!!

What's the advantage of Vista? It has the most current security measures, networking features, memory management, drivers, etc. Is it "faster" or "slower" than XP? I honestly don't even know what that means. Once the OS is loaded you should never notice any difference (assuming you are not using an old, "under powered" system). Given the specs of today's equipment Vista should run just fine. I use both Vista and XP (on different systems) and candidly, the Vista systems run more smoothly.

I'm planning on buying a new computer and would like to know what OS I should install.

Vista is new and will be around for a long while but it will take a lot more system ressources to run (at least 1 or 2 Gb of RAM). So, risk of lack of performance, depending of course on the computer you get.

How long will XP be updated before Microsoft ditches us. I heard XP Home will stop being updated soon and XP Pro SP2 will last another 5 years. Is that true?

If I can count on updates for the next 5 years, should I stay with XP? With todays superpowerful computers, won't it be even faster with XP instead of Vista?

What is the real advantage of going with Vista?
